UNSC

Topic: Violent Extremism in the Sahel Region

“The Security Council has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. It has 15 Members, and each Member has one vote. Under the Charter of the United Nations, all Member States are obligated to comply with Council decisions.

The Security Council takes the lead in determining the existence of a threat to the peace or act of aggression. It calls upon the parties to a dispute to settle it by peaceful means and recommends methods of adjustment or terms of settlement. In some cases, the Security Council can resort to imposing sanctions or even authorize the use of force to maintain or restore international peace and security.” (UN)

Historical Security Council

Topic: Suez Canal Crisis (October 28th 1956)

The Historical Security Council (HSC) revisits past global crises, tasking delegates with maintaining international peace and security within a specific historical context. It consists of 15 members, each with one vote, and its decisions are binding under the UN Charter.

The HSC analyzes threats to peace, urging diplomatic resolution while considering historical alliances and geopolitical tensions. When necessary, it can impose sanctions or authorize force, shaping history through strategic negotiation and crisis management.

Topic: Human Trafficking an Illegal Immigration in the African Horn

“The Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental body within the United Nations system responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe and for addressing situations of human rights violations and making recommendations on them. It has the ability to discuss all thematic human rights issues and situations that require its attention throughout the year.” (UNHRC)

UNEC

Topic: Desertification

The United Nations Environmental Council (UNEC) addresses global environmental challenges, promoting sustainable development and international cooperation. It brings together member states to formulate policies, set environmental standards, and coordinate global efforts to combat climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

The UNEC encourages peaceful collaboration, advises on environmental crises, and recommends actionable solutions. It may propose international agreements, mobilize resources, and support sustainable initiatives to protect the planet for future generations.

Topic: Rising debt in Sub-Saharan countries

“The Economic and Social Council is at the heart of the United Nations system to advance the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental. It is the central platform for fostering debate and innovative thinking, forging consensus on ways forward, and coordinating efforts to achieve internationally agreed goals.
